Local Companies Host Career Services Industry Tours

The second round of industry tours for college representatives was held on September 29 with 6 “tourists” in attendance.  The tours are part of a collaborative project among colleges, JARI and the regional BASICS Committee.  The purpose of the project is to facilitate discussion between business and education regarding student internships, career opportunities and projects that provide real world work experience.

“We appreciate the time and eagerness of our local companies to collaborate in programs and services to better prepare our students and connect them to jobs and internships,” said Larry Brugh, Associate Dean of Career Services and Workforce Education at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College.  “It’s extremely helpful for us to get a better understanding of the operations of local companies.”
A special thank you to the following companies who hosted the tours:  Alternative Community Resource Program (ACRP), Gautier Steel & Gautier Specialty Metals and RNDT, Inc.  The participating schools were Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, St. Francis University, Penn State Altoona, Juniata College and UPJ.
Additional tours will be held across the region on an ongoing basis.  If you are interested in hosting a tour, please contact Debi Balog via email at  or by calling 814.262.8366.

A Transitional Re-entry Advisory Committee (TRAC) has been formed to assist ex-offenders with successful re-entry into the community.  The committee is comprised of various non-profit partners, educational institutions, employers, law enforcement and community agencies.  The goal of the committee is to help individuals “stay on track” by improving their lives through education, employment, support services and a reduced rate of recidivism.  TRAC will hold a meeting at 10:00 am on July 26 at the Penn Traffic Building Conference Room located at 319 Washington Street, downtown.  The committee is inviting employers to participate to assist with providing job search advice and options for employment.  If you are interested in attending the meeting and/or becoming a member, please contact Debi Balog, Director, Workforce Development and TRAC Committee member at 814-262-8366 or via e-mail
