Tribune-Democrat/GJKIZ Upstarts and Innovators Series Continues:  Guy Berkebile, of Guy Chemical, will be the featured entrepreneur for November.  GJKIZ Schools and area high schools are invited to send interested faculty and students to meet with Guy at 11 AM at Allegany College of Maryland, Somerset Campus, on November 7.  He will discuss his story of founding his chemical plant, located in Berlin, PA.  Background information is available at www.guychemical.com.  For more information on Upstarts and Innovators, contact Amy Noon at anoon@jari.com or 814.535.8675

Tribune-Democrat/GJKIZ Upstarts and Innovators Series, part deux.  Entrepreneur Salvatore "Sam" Valenty, President and CEO of Valenty Bottled Water, addressed a packed classroom of business students at Saint Francis University on October 22.  He spoke of his experiences as an entrepreneur in many business ventures over the years with words of encouragement to the students in attendance.  Mr. Valenty was a speaker through GJKIZ's continuing Upstarts and Innovators Series.  To read Shawn Piatek's entire story in the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat,  click here .

Upstarts and Innovators Series, October 22, 2007

Association for Information Technology Professionals (AITP) meeting.  The next AITP meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 13, at the Boulevard Grill from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  The featured speaker will be Brian Conboy, President of Advanticom, who will deliver a presentation on Network Security.  For more information on this presentation, or to join the Johnstown AITP, visit their website at www.aitpjohnstown.com.  

Torchbearers Series:  The second installment of the  Torchbearers Series was held on Thursday, November 1, at 7:00 pm in the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center, downtown Johnstown.  The featured speakers were Dan Perkins and Dr. Donato Zucco who provided an overview of The Challenge Program.  To obtain more information or to purchase tickets to the next Torchbearer Lecture, check online at the  Greater Johnstown/Cambria County Chamber of Commerce.

Say Goodbye to Stream Pollution.  A recent article reported by Randy Griffith in the Johnstown Tribune Democrat provides hope to area residents that our streams may some day be free from acid mine drainage.  There is a pilot project now being undertaken in St. Michael.  This innovative acid-mine-drainage treatment system has the potential to transform streams into treatment plants that clean up our water.  For more information and the entire story, click here.

Congratulations to Kuchera Defense Systems.  A second award totaling $600,000 was made by Kathleen McGinty, State Secretary of Environmental Protection, to further develop Kuchera's Center For Excellence for Advanced Energy Systems Manufacturing.  The original grant in 2006 resulted in the creation of 50 new jobs.  More information in the Johnstown Tribune Democrat; story by Shawn Piatek can be found here.

Congratulations to Johnstown Redevelopment Authority (JRA).  JRA received $727,000 in awards through the Department of Community and Economic Development's (DCED) Housing and Redevelopment Assistance Program slated for project's in Johnstown's Eighth Ward and West Taylor Township.  The project funds are intended to assist with community and economic development as part of Governor Edward Rendell's Economic Stimulus Package.    To read more information on these awards featured on the DCED website, please click here.

Green is the new color of Autumn in Johnstown.  As reported in the Johnstown Tribune Democrat by Shawn Piatek, The Pasquerilla Conference Center was awash in "green"  last week with the American Institute of Architect's Middle Pennsylvania Chapter's yearly symposium featuring the main topic of  "Investing in Green."  Information was presented in workshops and by speakers to promote and support green-building techniques.  More information can be found in Shawn's article.

Our KIZ partners.  Friday, November 1, begins the York Regional Entrepreneurship Week hosted by the York Keystone Innovation Zone (York KIZ).  Workshops being offered include Finance 101, Ready for Investors, The Basics: How to Start a Business in PA, and Does Your Idea Have Commercial Potential.  Also being held is the 2nd Annual York Entrepreneurship Symposium, an all-day event, and finally the entire event will culminate with the evening Entrepreneurship Bash.  For exact dates and times or for registration information for any of these events, please visit the York KIZ website at www.yorkkiz.org.  

Hospital Hi-Tech.  In a move toward progressive innovation, Conemaugh Hospital now has free Internet access for patients and visitors.  Hotspots at the Main Campus (Franklin St.) are in the Clinical Pavilion Atrium, CrossRoads Cafe, patient/family waiting rooms, and inpatient rooms.  At the Lee Campus (downtown), the hotspots are in the lobby and waiting areas.  You can find more information on www.conemaugh.org

Internet2 MORE THAN (2x) twice as fast.  Completed in August of 2007, the new Internet2 network now is ten times faster, a 100 Gbps capacity.  This network, run by Level 3 Communications, Inc., parallels the regular Internet to allow universities, corporations, and researchers to share large amounts of information in real time.  It is expected that this network could increase capacity another four times to 400 Gbps.  For full article information:  MSNBC.com

More than just Wind!  The Renewable Energy Center at Saint Francis, founded in 2005, has a mission to provide education on cost-effective and environmentally sound energy alternatives.  Under the direction of Eric Foley, REC is becoming more well-recognized in our area.  They recently published the October 2007  Newsletter and the link makes it available for you to view.  To receive copies of future editions of this newsletter, contact Chrysa Wyland at cwyland@francis.edu .

Saint Francis Small Business Development Center Workshops.  Basics of Selling on eBay will be held on Wednesday, November 14.  Cost is $30 a person.  Tax Issues for Small Businesses will be held on Thursday, November 15.  Cost is $10 a person.  Technology in the Workplace will be held on Wednesday, December 5.  Cost is $10 a person.  Beyond the Basics of Selling on eBay: Techniques for the Serious Seller will be held on Tuesday, December 18.  Cost is $65 a person.  All workshops will be held at the Saint Francis Small Business Development Center in Loretto.  Included with most registrations is a one-year subscription to Inc.
